e.Gate Access Control System is a network based access control system (although it supports autonomous mode) capable of handling from a single door control up to hundreds of doors (limited only by the performance of PC server). The e.Gate software broke new ground in the user interface design and system expandability by incorporating the Virtual Mimic Panel (VMP) and built-in Logic Programming capability.

1. Introduction

Abacus Silicon Technology has launched the e.Gate World, a programme to license the revolutionary e.Gate Access Control technology, during the SecuTech Expo 2004.

By subscribing a low membership fee of less than USD 1,000 per month (USD 11,136 annually), a subscriber can become a Member of the e.Gate World programme. A Member will receive a full suite of source codes of the e.Gate Access Control system software. The software suite has a total file size in excess of 50 M-byte, equivalent to 1 million lines of programme codes. The source codes will enable the Member to enhance or tailor the software for their specific markets. The Members are free to market the end product under their brand name and can easily be localized as the software support double-byte character sets, which can be ported to any spoken language supported by Windows Operating System.

Through e.Gate World program, Abacus Silicon hopes to bring the product to the world markets and at the same time, ensure that the system integrators (Members) are able to respond to local market and user requirements more effectively, which in turn, improve customer satisfaction. With this programme, a win-win-win situation can be achieved for system integrator, end user and Abacus Silicon.

2. Key Product Features/Innovation

2.1 New Business Model with Better Manufacture-Distributor Relationship
The e.Gate World programme changes the typical Manufacturer-Distributor model of product distribution. In the current era of high-speed communication network widely available, especially via the Internet, end users are now able to obtain up-to-date information and direct support from the Manufacturer or even, purchase the products on-line, without going through distributors.

Armed with the system source codes provided under the e.Gate World programme, Member/Distributors will be able to provide customized products and services to the end users, creating much higher value in the supply chain. Product differentiation and brand building are now possible to avoid destructive price war with other Member distributors and parallel importers.


3. Practicability:


3.1 Low Investment
With low annual membership fee, a Member does not have to invest high up front R&D cost. A low start up cost of only USD11,136 is needed to obtain the technology of a product, which was developed at a cost of more than US 1 million dollars and over 4 years by a team of veteran security and technical professionals.

3.2 Low Business Risk
The e.Gate Access Control system is a completed and tested product. The product can be evaluated and test can be conducted before business decision is made. Free software evaluation kit is available.

3.3 Shorter Time to Market
The e.Gate Access Control system is ready to be marketed. Lengthy R&D schedule and the possibility of development delay can be avoided.

3.4 Lower Cost for Product Support
A typical product development project needs a much bigger team of experienced professionals during the product development phase, but only a small team of relatively new engineers is needed to maintain and enhance the product. Under the e.Gate World programme, only a small team of 1 to 2 technical staff is needed for Members to enjoy the benefits of a finished product. Out sourcing of R&D works to other e.Gate World Partners is possible to ensure that the product support department is running at a most efficient and cost effective way. Risk of losing the technical know-how of the product is low as a new engineer can be trained by e.Gate World Partner or Abacus Silicon when needed.

3.5 Faster Response to Market Needs
Armed with the program source codes, the Member distributors will be free to modify the e.Gate Access Control system according their specific market needs. The Member can make price, schedule and other business decisions on their own, with which improve customer’s satisfaction.

3.6 Low Customization Cost
Customization of e.Gate Access Control system can be conducted totally by the Member/Distributors or, out source to other e.Gate World’s Partners with better cost and efficiency.

3.7 Control over Product Roadmap
Member distributors will be able to drive the product in the direction much suitable to their unique market situation without compromise. Features can be added to enhance the marketing strength in specialized segments pursued by the Member.

3.8 Ease in Product Integration
Member distributors will be able to tightly integrate the e.Gate Access Control system with their own or their strategic products without costly intermediate gateway devices. This will enhance their ability to provide complete and wholesome solution to their customers

3.9 Product Differentiation
With the ability to enhance and integrate the e.Gate Access Control system with other system on their own, none of the end products modified by the Member distributors will be identical. Direct competition with other Members based on price within the same market can be avoided.

3.10 Product Branding
Members are encouraged to market the e.Gate Access Control system under their own brand name. This will enable the Member distributor to build their brand name.

3.11 Export Markets
With the product differentiation and ability for brand building, Members can export their unique product to overseas markets without having price war with other Members in the new markets. This not possible with the typical Manufacturer/Distributor model which a distributor is confined to a specific market segment to avoid direct competition between distributors.
